The subject property is comprised of two parcels: 2095 Main Street (077/026), a 14.2 acre parcel improved with a former public elementary school; 0 Falmouth Road (077/027), a .8 acre vacant parcel; and 69 Hilltop Drive (077/017), an adjoining .29 acre vacant parcel.
The building, constructed in 1957, was a public elementary school which originally housed grades K-5. The school was part of the Barnstable Public School System. In 2008, with the district facing a five million dollar deficit, it was voted to close four elementary schools, including this one. The final day of school occurred on June 19, 2009. In July 2012, the School Committee declared the school as surplus to their needs, and ownership transferred back to the Town of Barnstable. The building is now owned and the property is maintained by the Town of Barnstable under the control of the Town Manager. After a comprehensive assessment of the building, it has been concluded that reuse of building is not economically feasible or desirable and the building is slated for demolition.
Prior community discussions for this property have produced visions for the site that include Town recreational facilities, including active playground spaces and athletic fields, housing, community space, and additional parking to support village center uses.
